Narrated Aisha:

Whenever Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saw the rain, he used to say, "O Allah! Let it be a strong fruitful rain."

The Prophet ﷺ loved what was good for the people; thus, he would frequently pray for blessings and goodness [to manifest] for them. He ﷺ also loved rain, because it brings about blessings; however, he was fearful of clouds, wary that they may [be sent] as a punishment. In this hadeeth, ʿA’ishah, the Mother of the Believers, (may Allah be pleased with her) reports that whenever the Prophet ﷺ would see rain, he would call upon Allah, Exalted be He, that this rainfall may be: “a beneficial sayyib” - namely: a wholesome rainfall for the worshippers and lands, and not a rain of chastisement, destruction, or flooding; like [the way] Allah destroyed the people of Noah with devastating floods. The word sayyib is often applied to rain and clouds interchangeably, and what is meant here is that the rainfall be strong, yet not calamitous. While he ﷺ rejoiced over rain, he would also be cautious and fearful of the clouds. It is reported in Saheeh al-Bukhaaree and Saheeh Muslim, that ʿA’ishah(may Allah be pleased with her) said: “O Messenger of Allah! When people see the clouds, they are usually joyful, hoping that rainfall may come along with it - whereas I notice when you see them, signs of dissatisfaction can be perceived on your face.” He ﷺ responded by saying, “O ʿA’ishah! What guarantee do I have that there will be no punishment by it - [given that] some people have been chastised by squalling winds? [Mind you] some people have seen this punishment, and yet said: “This [cloud] appears to be bringing rain.” From the benefits that we can conclude from this hadeeth is we should supplicate for an increase in goodness, blessings, and benefit when it rains..
