Narrated `Amr bin Taghlib:

Some property or something was brought to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and he distributed it. He gave to some men and ignored the others. Later he got the news of his being admonished by those whom he had ignored. So he glorified and praised Allah and said, "Amma ba'du. By Allah, I may give to a man and ignore another, although the one whom I ignore is more beloved to me than the one whom I give. But I give to some people as I feel that they have no patience and no contentment in their hearts and I leave those who are patient and self-content with the goodness and wealth which Allah has put into their hearts and `Amr bin Taghlib is one of them." `Amr added, By Allah! Those words of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) are more beloved to me than the best red camels.

The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) was keen for people to enter the religion of Allah in crowds, therefore he used to seek to soften their hearts by giving them what they liked. So for the one who liked wealth, he would give him abundantly, and for the one who liked pride and high status, he would give him a share of that. But for the one who was strong in faith, he would leave him to Allah to reward him for his faith. In this hadith, ‘Amr ibn Taghlib narrates that when some wealth or captives – who were seized from the enemy, both males and females – were brought to the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), he gave to some people, so as to soften their hearts, and he did not give to some other people, as he trusted them because of what Allah had granted them of strong faith and certainty. Then he came to know that some of those who had not received anything had complained about him not giving anything to them. So he (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) addressed the people and explained to them that he only gave to some people and withheld from others, even though those from whom he had withheld wealth were dearer to him than those to whom he had given something, because he only gave it to some people because of what he saw in their hearts of impatience and panic, which refers to intense fear and lack of patience. The fact that he did not give to some people did not mean that he looked down on them or because they were lacking in religious commitment, or because he did not care about them; rather he entrusted them to what Allah had instilled in their hearts of light and perfect faith, trusting that their faith would not be shaken, because it was perfect. Then the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated that ‘Amr ibn Taghlib was one of those to whom he had not given anything because he trusted their faith and the goodness in their hearts. When ‘Amr ibn Taghlib (may Allah be pleased with him) heard these words from the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), he was content and rejoiced at that, and said: By Allah I would not like to have red camels instead of these words of the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). Red camels are the best of camels, those which are held in the highest esteem; they are camels whose red colour is not mixed with anything else. What is meant is: I would not like to have the pleasures and conveniences of this worldly life instead of these words of praise from the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). This hadith indicates that it is appropriate to explain one’s position so as to leave no room for resentment in people’s hearts. It highlights the good attitude of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), and how he treated his companions kindly. It explains that the faith in people’s hearts may vary, and it may increase and decrease. It highlights the virtue and status of ‘Amr ibn Taghlib (may Allah be pleased with him)..
