حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو، - وَهُوَ ابْنُ دِينَارٍ - عَنْ جَابِرٍ، أَنَّ رَجُلاً، جَاءَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَالنَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَخْطُبُ فَقَالَ ‏"‏ أَصَلَّيْتَ يَا فُلاَنُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ لاَ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ قُمْ فَارْكَعْ ‏"‏ ‏.‏

English translation

Jabir said:

A man came (to the mosque) while the Prophet (ﷺ) was giving the (Friday) sermon. He asked: Did you pray, so-and-so? He replied: No. He (ﷺ) said: Stand and pray.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَحْبُوبٍ، وَإِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، - الْمَعْنَى - قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، وَعَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالاَ جَاءَ سُلَيْكٌ الْغَطَفَانِيُّ وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَخْطُبُ فَقَالَ لَهُ ‏"‏ أَصَلَّيْتَ شَيْئًا ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ لاَ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ صَلِّ رَكْعَتَيْنِ تَجَوَّزْ فِيهِمَا ‏"‏ ‏.‏

English translation

Jabir and Abu Salih reported on the authority of Abu Hurairah:

Sulaik al-Ghatafani came (to the mosque) while the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was giving the (Friday) sermon. He asked him: Did you pray something ? He said: No. He said: Offer two rak'ahs and make them short.

‏ إِذَا جَاءَ أَحَدُكُمْ وَالإِمَامُ يَخْطُبُ فَلْيُصَلِّ رَكْعَتَيْنِ يَتَجَوَّزُ فِيهِمَا ‏

English translation

This tradition has also been transmitted through a different chain of narrators by Jabir b. 'Abd Allah. This version adds:

He (the Prophet) turned to the people and said: When one of you comes (on Friday) while the imam is preaching, he should pray two rak'ahs and make them short.
