Narrated Umm Salamah, Ummul Mu'minin:

Safinah said: I was a slave of Umm Salamah, and she said: I shall emancipate you, but I stipulate that you must serve the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as long as you live. I said: Even if you do not make a stipulation, I shall not leave the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). She then emancipated me and made the stipulation with me.

This Hadith highlights the permissibility of conditional manumission, such as when a master frees a slave on the condition that the freed individual will serve for a specified period after emancipation. In this narration, Safinah (may Allah be pleased with him) was a servant owned by Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), meaning he was her Mawla. She said to him: “I will set you free on the condition that you serve the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for as long as you live.” That is, she intended to free him, but with the stipulation that he would devote his life to serving the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Placing a clearly defined and known condition on manumission is permissible in Islamic law. However, if the condition entails a form of perpetual servitude that undermines the essence of freedom, it would contradict the principles of emancipation. Safinah responded: “Even if you had not set that condition upon me, I would never leave the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for as long as I live.” This reflected his heartfelt desire, as companionship with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was a great honor. The Companions of the Prophet (may Allah be pleased with them) were eager to serve him and saw it as a noble privilege because of the closeness, distinction, and reward it entailed. He then said: “So she freed me and made it a condition upon me,” meaning she formalized the condition of serving the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) upon his manumission. The Hadith clearly illustrates the deep love and devotion the Companions had for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)..
