sahih· Al-Albani

Narrated Jabir:

We were with the Prophet (ﷺ) when a funeral passed hi and he stood up for it. When we went to carry it, we found that it was a funeral of a Jew. We, therefore said: Messenger of Allah, this is the funeral of a Jew. He said: Death is fearful event, so when you see a funeral, stand up.

‏ إِنَّ الْمَوْتَ فَزَعٌ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ جَنَازَةً فَقُومُوا ‏

A Muslim must always remain alert to the Commands of Allah, the Exalted. The signs and events that occur around him serve only to further remind him of the Majesty and Power of Allah. He must never allow himself to become heedless of them.In this Hadith, Jabir ibn `Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: “We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) when a funeral procession passed by, and he stood for it.” Meaning: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood as the funeral passed by, without asking whose it was or whether it belonged to a Muslim or not. The word Janazah refers to the deceased placed on the bier. Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “When we went to carry it, we realized it was the funeral of a Jew.” Meaning: The deceased and the bier belonged to a Jew, not a Muslim. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) made clear that the ruling was general, not limited to any one person or religion. So they said: “O Messenger of Allah, it is only the funeral of a Jew?” He said: “death is a fearful event,” meaning: it inspires fear and awe. “So when you see a funeral, stand up,” meaning: stand in recognition of the gravity of death and the fear and terrors it entails. The funeral procession serves as a reminder of that. The standing is not in reverence for the deceased. Another narration from `Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) indicates the abrogation of this ruling, wherein it is mentioned: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to stand for funerals, then later sat.” This indicates that standing for funerals was legislated in the early period, then was later abrogated when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ceased doing so. Legal consideration is given to the latter of his actions (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)..
