It was narrated from Sa’d that
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) entered upon him to visit him when he was sick, when he was in Makkah. He said: “O Messenger of Allah, I am afraid that I will die in the land from which I migrated as Sa"d bin Khawlah died. Pray to Allah to heal me.” He said: “O Allah, heal Sa"d, O Allah, heal Sa"d, O Allah, heal Sa"d." He said: “O Messenger of Allah, I have a great deal of wealth, and I have no heir except one daughter. Can I bequeath all my wealth (to charity)?” He said: “No." He said: “Can I bequeath two thirds of it?” He said: “No,ʻʼ He said: “Can I bequeath half of it?” He said: “No." He said: “Can I bequeath one third?” He said: “One third, and one third is a lot. If you spend from your wealth, it is a charity for you; if you spend from your wealth on your dependents, it is a charity for you; if you spend from your wealth on your family, it is a charity for you. If you leave your family something that is enough for them to live on that is better than leaving them to ask people for help.”
