Riyad as-Salihin, 1653

Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari (May Allah be pleased with him) said:

A house in Al-Madinah was burnt with its occupants inside it one night. When this was reported to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) he said, "Fire is your enemy. So, put it out before going to bed." <b>[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]</b>.

وعن أبي موسى الأشعري رضي الله عنه قال‏:‏ احترق بيت بالمدينة على أهله من الليل، فلما حدث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بشأنهم قال‏:‏ ‏

‏إن هذه النار عدو لكم، فإذا نمتم فأطفئوها‏

‏ ‏(‏‏(‏متفق عليه‏)‏‏)‏‏.‏

<b>Guidance from the Hadiths:</b><br> 1) It is prohibited to leave a burning fire in houses when going to bed lest it should set the house on fire.<br> 2) It is recommended to cover food vessels and close water tanks to prevent insects, dirt, epidemics, or anything harmful from falling therein.<br> 3) It is recommended to shut the doors before going to bed.<br> 4) One of the means of protection against the devil’s cunning plots is to regularly recite the Shariah-approved supplications.<br> <br> <b>Benefit:</b><br> There is nothing wrong in leaving electric lamps with dim light turned on during the night. The reason behind the prohibition above is the fear from burning, a possibility that does not exist with electric lamps, and Allah knows best.
