Riyad as-Salihin, 1252

Abu Qatadah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was asked about observing As-Saum (the fast) on the tenth day of Muharram, and he replied, "It is an expiation for the sins of the preceding year." <b>[Muslim]</b>.

وعن أبي قتادة رضي الله عنه أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم سئل عن صيام يوم عاشوراء فقال‏:‏ ‏

‏يكفر السنة الماضية‏

‏ ‏(‏‏(‏رواه مسلم‏)‏‏)‏‏.‏

<b>Guidance from the Hadiths:</b><br> 1) ‘Āshūrā is the tenth day of Muharram. It is recommended to fast it in gratitude to Allah Almighty, as He saved Prophet Mūsa (Moses) (peace be upon him) and his people and drowned Pharaoh and his people.<br> 2) It is recommended to fast the day of ‘Āshūrā’, as it expiates the sins of the previous year.<br> <br> <b>Benefit:</b><br> The Sunnah is to fast the day of ‘Āshūrā’ along with a day before or a day after, so as to differ from the Jews.
