Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to a man who was performing Salah while his lower garment was trailing, "Go and perform your Wudu' again." The man went and came back having performed it. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said (again), "Go and perform your Wudu'." Someone present said to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): "O Messenger of Allah! You ask him to perform his Wudu' and then you kept silent (without saying the reason for it)." He (ﷺ) said, "He performed Salah while his lower garment was below his ankles. Allah does not accept the Salah of a man who trails his lower garment." [Abu Dawud].

Guidance from the Hadith:
1) It is a duty to rectify wrong things through wisdom and good admonition.
2) A stern warning is issued to one who wears his garment below the ankles.

Benefit:
The prayer of a person wearing his garment below the ankles is valid, yet he is sinful. This is because the prohibition is general, in prayer and outside it. So, this sin does not affect prayer in particular. However, a person should fear Allah Almighty and not use His favors as a means for incurring His anger. The fortunate believer is the one who follows the Prophet’s example and observes his commands and prohibitions.
