Narrated Ibn `Umar:

(The Prophet) said, "O Allah! Bless our Sham and our Yemen." People said, "Our Najd as well." The Prophet (ﷺ) again said, "O Allah! Bless our Sham and Yemen." They said again, "Our Najd as well." On that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "There will appear earthquakes and afflictions, and from there will come out the side of the head of Satan."

Allah, the Exalted and Almighty, has bestowed some regions of the world with blessing that He did not place in others. Some of them have become places of evil and affliction, while others have become places of goodness and blessings. In this hadeeth, some of that has been discussed, where the Prophet ﷺ was supplicating for the regions of Shaam and Yemen to be blessed, and he said: “O Allah! Bless for us our Shaam, and our Yemen!” The Shaam (The Levant) is a region situated north of the Arabian Peninsula, and it was a source of their trade and sustenance. Nowadays, the area comprises Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine. As for Yemen, it is a country situated to the south of the Arabian Peninsula along the coast of the Red Sea. It also used to be a source for their trade and sustenance. Arabs would set out to journey to Yemen in the winter and to Shaam in the summer - for commerce and to bring back goods and food. Some of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ said: “And our Najd!” - meaning: ‘Call onto Allah to also bless the region of Najd!’ - which is where the land rises in altitude from the region of the Arabs to the land of ‘Iraq. However, the Prophet ﷺ repeated his supplication, yet did not mention the region of Najd [in it]. They repeated their request for him ﷺ to supplicate for Najd. Afterwards, he said: “There, the earthquakes and afflictions will appear, and with it, the horn of Satan will emerge”’ - meaning that in these lands, [there] will be earthquakes and afflictions that appear in the region, and the age of Satan will commence - namely: that his party and partisans will arise. It has been said that this refers to the great discord, afflictions, and appalling armed conflicts that occurred in Iraq, such as the Incident of The Camel, the Battles of Siffeen and Haaroora’, the civil strife of the Umayyads, and the emergence of the Khawaarij. This is because all the origin of those events was from Iraq and the east of Najd; which are the areas were the dwellings of the Rabeeʿah and Muḍar [i.e. the two most powerful rival groups of Arab tribes in ancient Northern Arabia] at that time. And Allah knows best..
