Greeting Non-Muslims and the Prohibition of Taking Initiative in Doing So

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Do not greet the Jews and the Christians before they greet you; and when you meet any one of them on the road, force him to go to the narrowest part of it." <b>[Muslim]</b>.

عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال‏:‏ ‏

‏ لا تبدءوا اليهود ولا النصارى بالسلام، فإذا لقيتم أحدهم في طريق فاضطروه إلى أضيقه‏

‏ ‏(‏‏(‏رواه مسلم‏)‏‏)‏‏.‏

Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "When the people of the Book greet you, respond with: 'Wa 'alaikum' (And upon you)". <b>[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]</b>.

وعن أنس رضي الله عنه قال‏:‏ قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم‏:‏ ‏"‏إذا سلم عليكم أهل الكتاب فقولوا‏:‏ وعليكم” ‏(‏‏(‏متفق عليه‏)‏‏)‏

Usamah bin Zaid (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Prophet (ﷺ) passed by a mixed company of people which included Muslims, polytheists and Jews, and he gave them the greeting (i.e., saying As- Salamu 'Alaikum). <b>[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]</b>.

وعن أسامة رضي الله عنه أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم مر على مجلس فيه أخلاط من المسلمين والمشركين -عبدة الأوثان واليهود- فسلم عليهم النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم‏"‏ ‏(‏‏(‏متفق عليه‏)‏‏)‏‏.‏
